Title: MAN BEHIND THE MUSIC
Author: Johnson, Kim
Description: "I love the human voice - singing to me is the ultimate in music-making," says Enrique Ali, sitting with his long, gangly limbs akimbo in a Holy Name Convent audiovisual room. A piano is a machine with levers. Wind instruments are closer - you have to breathe, just like singers - but violinists just think in terms of sound."

Title: MEMOIRS OF THE DRY RIVER
Author: Carew, Sharon
Description: The Dry River, which divides Port of Spain into East and West, is a huge concrete drain with a small egg-shaped drain running down the middle. It is really the St Ann's River, diverted from its natural course through Port of Spain. From its source in the Chancellor Ridge, it flows into the cool St Ann's Valley and starts its winding course to the St Ann's Reservoir, then along the St Ann's road to the Belmont Circular Road bridge. Before it was diverted in 1787 the river flowed down Observatory Street, then westward along what is now Park Street, across what is now Frederick Street, diagonally through Woodford Square, down Chacon Street and across Independence Square (Marine Square at the time) to the sea. The Dry River was paved between 1930 and 1934 to eliminate the problems of flooding, debris and silt deposits.

Parenting means coping with the habits and difficulties of growing years, in effect, keeping on top of every situation! When your charges include bears, elk, bobcats, otters, alligators and snakes the challenge becomes even greater. Donna-Mae Nelson has followed her heart, answering the call of nature from an early age. She has created a niche for herself in what has been predominantly man's domain.

Title: THE MUSIC AND RITUALS OF EAST PORT OF SPAIN
Author:
Description: An amazing subculture emerged in Port of Spain, in fact east Port of Spain, by the 1870s. It was significant because it contained the rootstock from which the Afro-Franco cultural matrix emerged into what we now call 'born creole'. This heterogeneous assortment of people more or less covered the intermingling of that flotsam and jetsam of Trinidad's Caribbean experience who had ended up here by the time of the British conquest in 1797. Despite attempts by the authorities, they had continued to preserve a fluid, free-wheeling lifestyle that contained the extremes of excessive religious piety and the working of obeah, drunken debauchery and the brave and ferocious activity of the stickfight.
